How to Write AI Prompts That Get Expert Results: The 5-Part Formula
Stop treating AI like a simple search bar and getting generic results. The problem isn’t the tool; it’s your prompt. Master our proven five-part structure to create high-performing prompts and never stare at a blank chat box again.
Most people use AI tools the same way they use Google: type a few words, hope for the best, get something generic back — then conclude the tool is overhyped.
The tool isn’t the problem. The prompt is.
After building hundreds of prompts for our own products and workflows, we’ve found that almost every high-performing prompt follows the same five-part structure. Learn it once, and you’ll never stare at a blank chat box again.
The 5-Part Prompt Formula
1. Role — tell the AI who to be
Starting a prompt with “You are a senior contract lawyer…” or “Act as a pricing strategist…” isn’t a gimmick. It anchors the response in a specific body of knowledge and vocabulary. The same question answered “as a CFO” versus “as a marketing intern” produces genuinely different output — different priorities, different depth, different blind spots flagged.
2. Task — state exactly what you want done
One clear deliverable. Not “help me think about my email marketing” but “write a 5-email launch sequence.” Vague tasks produce vague essays; specific tasks produce usable output.
3. Context — give background and constraints
This is the part most people skip, and it’s the single biggest reason results feel generic. The AI doesn’t know your audience, your budget, your niche, or what you’ve already tried unless you say so.
4. Format — specify the structure of the output
Want bullets? A table? Under 150 words? Numbered steps? Say so. Otherwise you get the AI’s default format, which is usually longer and less scannable than what you actually need.
5. Tone — define the style, or show an example
“Professional but warm.” “Direct, no fluff.” “Written like a text to a friend.” Two or three words of tone direction is often the difference between output you can use as-is and output you have to rewrite. Even better: paste a short example of writing you like and say “match this style.”
The Formula in Action
Here’s a complete prompt using all five parts:
You are a freelance business consultant (Role). Create a 3-tier service menu — Starter, Pro, Premium — for a freelance web designer (Task). The designer works mostly with local small businesses, charges mid-market rates, and wants each tier to have a clear reason to upgrade (Context). Present it as a simple table with tier name, what’s included, and suggested price range (Format). Keep descriptions punchy — one line per item, no jargon (Tone).
Compare that to “make me a pricing menu for web design” and you can see why one produces something you’d actually send to clients and the other produces filler.
Quick Reference Table
| Part | What It Does | Skipping It Causes |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Anchors expertise and vocabulary | Shallow, generalist answers |
| Task | Defines one clear deliverable | Rambling essays instead of output |
| Context | Supplies your specifics and constraints | Generic, could-be-anyone results |
| Format | Controls structure and length | Walls of text you have to reformat |
| Tone | Sets the voice | Output you rewrite before using |
When Results Still Feel Generic
If you’ve used all five parts and the output still feels flat, the fix is almost always in Context — add more specifics about your situation — or in Examples — paste a sample of what “good” looks like and ask the AI to match it. Nine times out of ten, weak output means the prompt was missing information, not that the AI couldn’t do the job.
